Legacy is about continuing what was built before you, by adapting it to changing times - Harsh Shah

Gen Next diamantaire Harsh Shah shares his views on how AI, digital technology, and the perspectives of a new generation can take the legacy of the diamond industry to the next level.

Harsh Shah is a second-generation diamantaire from Pasavaja who is deeply involved with local and global initiatives of the diamond industry. He is an Organising Committee member of Young Diamantaires, a global initiative to build a net- work of emerging leaders, a member of the WFDB’s Marketing and Promotion Committee and also an invitee to the BDB Committee, where he is closely involved with revamping its digital initiatives.

Q1. You are actively involved with BDB, WFDB, Young Diamantaires and other global initiatives. How do you see your role within this ecosystem?

I see my role as someone who connects people and ideas within the industry. Through my involvement with Bharat Diamond Bourse, my contribution as an organizing committee member of Young Diamantaires, and my exposure to initiatives under the World Federation of Diamond Bourses, I have had the opportunity to interact with diamantaires across different markets. I believe the strength of our industry lies in collaboration and communication. My focus has always been on building genuine relationships and encouraging dialogue between institutions, members and the next generation. When institutions and individuals are aligned, growth becomes more structured, transparent and sustainable.

Q2. As a second-generation diamantaire, how has legacy shaped your business perspective?

Being a second-generation diamantaire has given me both grounding and responsibility. Legacy teaches discipline, ethics and the importance of long-term thinking. In our industry, credibility is built over decades, not transactions.

At PASAVAJA, we focus on natural diamonds, with a passion for fancy-colored diamonds, antique cuts and unique shaped stones. These segments reflect our belief in individuality and long-term value rather than volume-driven trading. Over time, I have learned that sustaining a family legacy is not only about continuing what was built before you, but about adapting it to changing times.

For me, that means embracing technology, strengthening global relationships and ensuring that traditional trust-based business models evolve alongside modern digital systems. Legacy provides the foundation, but innovation ensures continuity.

Q3. You are an Invitee to the BDB committee and actively support its digital initiatives. What’s next with  BDB?

As an Invitee to the committee at BDB, my focus has largely been on technology, digital transformation and global visibility. The recent launch of the E-Newsletter is part of a broader effort to modernize communication and create consistent structured outreach.

I believe BDB’s next phase is centered on strengthening its digital infrastructure. This includes revamping the website with a modern, globally aligned interface, improving discoverability through strong SEO practices, and preparing for AI-driven search environments through AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). As search behavior evolves, institutions must adapt to remain visible and relevant in international markets.

Expanding and strengthening the BDB IT team will be critical to support this long-term transformation. Technology is not just about design; it is about building systems that enhance transparency, communication and global reach. Over the next 6 to 12 months, members will see significant progress in BDB’s digital space, reflecting a more structured and forward-looking direction.

Q4. How do you see AI and emerging technologies influencing the diamond trade?

AI is becoming an important support system across industries, and the diamond trade is no exception. While relationships remain the core of our business, technology can enhance clarity, speed and strategic decision-making. AI can assist in market analysis, inventory structuring, digital marketing optimization and understanding customer behavior patterns.

As search engines transition toward AI-driven answer engines, structured content, SEO and AEO strategies will become increasingly relevant. Businesses and institutions that integrate technology thoughtfully, without compromising trust and ethics, will be better positioned for long-term growth. The key is balance: leveraging intelligent systems while preserving the human relationships that define our trade.

Q5. What role do Next Gen Diamantaires play in strengthening global connectivity?

Next Gen Diamantaires bring adaptability and digital fluency to the industry. They are comfortable using technology, engaging across borders and building relationships through both physical and digital platforms. However, continuity of values remains equally important. When experience and digital fluency work together, the industry advances with both confidence and innovation. The next generation can strengthen global connectivity through fresh thinking and adaptability, but the guidance of industry leaders remains fundamental in shaping responsible growth.

Q6. Who have been your guiding lights in your journey, and how have they influenced your growth?

No journey in the diamond industry is built alone. My first and most important mentor has been my father, Mahendra Shah, who instilled in me the importance of ethics, patience and long-term credibility. His experience and discipline have been foundational in shaping my approach to business.

I have also been fortunate to learn from leaders such as Rami Baron and Mehul bhai Shah, who have provided guidance, perspective and opportunities to become more involved in broader industry initiatives. Their openness in sharing experiences and encouraging greater participation at institutional levels has inspired me to contribute beyond my own business and think about the collective growth of the industry. Having access to such guiding lights reinforces the importance of mentorship and structured leadership in our trade.

Q7. What is your long-term vision for BDB and India’s role in the global diamond industry?

India already plays a dominant role in global diamond manufacturing. The next step is strengthening institutional visibility, digital leadership and coordinated global engagement. With focused investment in technology, improved digital platforms and consistent communication through initiatives such as the E-Newsletter, BDB can significantly enhance its global perception.

By combining legacy values, structured networking, AI-driven systems and strong institutional collaboration, India can continue to strengthen its position not only as a manufacturing hub but also as a digitally progressive and globally aligned diamond center.
